So I finally got around to finishing the journal! I think it turned out really well. So here we go.

I did forget to take some pictures but updates should come when I get to my 221b Journal, but I’m getting ahead of myself. If you want to read part 1 here it is.

For part 2 you will need:

  • A book press, or a very heavy book
  • Elmers Glue
  • Your loose pages
  • Cut out book spine
  • Cloth, thin but sturdy
  • Scissors

Make the back of your book as flat as possible. If you have or can make a book press do so. I borrowed one from my school’s design lab. Tighten the pages between the press.

When you have it secure, and poking out of the press, or thick book, start applying the Elmer glue. I smoothed it out across the length and width with my fingers.

Here it is after a few coats. A few coats was enough to hold it together enough to take it out of the book press.

The inside of the book had pages that had sections that were not glued down.

And more layers. Honestly, I probably layered over 20 coats of glue. I smoothed out some while left others zig-zag. Make sure all the layers dry.

Getting close to the end. It may look wavy on the spine, but it is quite solid now.

Now cut out a rectangle that is not as long as the spine but as wide as the spine and cover.

So here is where I forgot to take pictures of. I was trying to glue it all quickly. Here’s what I did:

Glue the cloth the book pages spine. You can be liberal on the glue.

Glue the cloth to the cover. Make sure to use a lot of glue here too. The glue soaked through the cloth and stuck to the first and last page of the book.

Put a scrap page after the glued page so it doesn’t go to the next page.

Let it dry for a while.

I hope I was clear with my instructions. If you try this please let me know.

My final project. I can’t wait to show you how I made the River Song Journal cover, but time is something I don’t always have.

More to come soon!
