So I decided since Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are best friends, and my best friend and I enjoy movies, I would make us “friendship beanies” for lack of a better term. With the same basic pattern, these two hats are basically the same except for the colors.

For the hat, I used this pattern, where as for the star I used this pattern. I was very easy to knit. With this hat, I didn’t totally follow the pattern, but ended up knitting the beanie longer than what the pattern calls for.

Materials:

  • Size 6 double sided knitting needles (I used 5 needles)
  • Size 7 double sided knitting needles (I used size 8)
  • 1 skein of dark grey (I used left over Red Heart)
  • 1 skein of black (left over Red Hear as well)
  • An red laying around for the star.
  • A yarn needle to sew star to hat.

To start the beanie, I decided to use 4 double sided size 6 needles to hold my yarn while knitting the ribbing. Dividing the stitches by 4 was easier for me to handle. I started out in the dark grey. Any cast on method is fine, I just use a tighter method found here. I followed the pattern when it came to the ribbing.

Once you are done with the ribbing knit around with the larger needles for an inch. This is where you will start using the black, so have that ready.

So once the hat is 5 inches long knit the following rows:

  • 1 round in black
  • 3 in grey
  • 2 in black
  • 2 in grey
  • 3 in black
  • 1 in grey (this is the last row in grey)

Here is what it looks like on the beanie. This transition is used to bring in black in a subtle way, while also mimicking the pieces that make up the Winter Soldier’s arm. Continue with the rest of the pattern in black, starting with an inch in total black before the decreasing.

Here is what it looks like without the star.

So for the star, just follow directions, but leave a long tail for sewing it to the beanie. I just attached it to the ribbing, because that was a good place for me. If you want to attach it anywhere else, go right ahead.

And that’s it. After weaving in ends you are done. Let me know in the comments how it went for you.

Have fun making and wearing this beanie!
